Museums, schools and teachers: a relationship to be reviewed
The importance given to the pursuit of a scientific culture for the formation of informed citizens, has
transcended the formal school and has spread to institutions of informal education, among which are science
museums. These spaces display objects, but mainly, interactive equipment that permit visitors to live ideas,
phenomena and scientific processes. Science museums also develop thematic exhibitions that nowadays tend to
adopt a critical position. All these characteristics have pretended to consider science museums as places to
support or supplement the formal teaching of science. But reality indicates that when schools visit the museum,
the learning that occurs there is of affective (motivational) rather than cognitive nature; and that the complicated
logistics and organization of the visits, plus the lack of knowledge by teachers of the informal educational
environment and the extracurricular events (out of school) features, seems to indicate that the results of this
educational option, do not produce the kind of learning expected by formal schooling. So, except for schools
that lack resources for the study of science, the common idea that science museums are the ideal tools for
learning formally this subject, has been questioned, until the difficulties discussed in this paper are not succeeded.
What it was seen as a successful option in the relationship between schools and museums, is to use those spaces
for the training of preservice teachers

The role of public science communication on scientific culture: approaches to its evaluation
In today's society its members are expected to acquire a scientific culture necessary for citizen and
democratic action. Several attempts have been performed to evaluate this culture by means of questionnaires
about knowledge and massive surveys of public perception of science and technology, but the effect of mass
media and the activities for public communication of science in the generation of that scientific culture have been
scarcely considered in those records. In this work, a model is proposed to register the various effects of public
communication of science in its diverse modalities and throught different mass media, ranging from
entertainment to informal learning, and according to the type of audience intended to be influenced, from
massive to individual
Metric dimension of maximal outerplanar graphs
In this paper, we study the metric dimension problem in maximal outerplanar graphs. Concretely, if ß(G) denotes the metric dimension of a maximal outerplanar graph G of order n, we prove that 2=ß(G)=¿2n5¿ and that the bounds are tight. We also provide linear algorithms to decide whether the metric dimension of G is 2 and to build a resolving set S of size ¿2n5¿ for G. Moreover, we characterize all maximal outerplanar graphs with metric dimension 2.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Effects on informal learning of biological evolution as results of museum mediation
Interactive science museums have been considered spaces where informal learning can occur especially when the
communication between exhibits and visitors is facilitated. A research is presented here, in which the effects on
knowledge, problem solving and attitudes towards science in mediated visits to an exhibition about biological
evolution (which tends to be a communicative difficult theme) are evaluated. The results show that there is no
significant gaining between the two first aspects in the case of guided visits, but instead, the presence of museum
guides helps to solve questions and promotes the desire to visit again. So, the guides are an invaluable support to
explore visitor’s previous information and to reduce the dislike for a particular topic. Besides, it enhances the
attention on the main subject of the exhibition and helps to fulfill the expectances of the visit. All this promotes
the desire to have a longer visit, which can increase the time spent in the museum. These findings will have to be
taken into account in the guide’s preparation

Paired and semipaired domination in near-triangulations
A dominating set of a graph G is a subset D of vertices such that every vertex not in D is adjacent to at least one vertex in D. A dominating set D is paired if the subgraph induced by its vertices has a perfect matching, and semipaired if every vertex in D is paired with exactly one other vertex in D that is within distance 2 from it. The paired domination number, denoted by ¿pr(G), is the minimum cardinality of a paired dominating set of G, and the semipaired domination number, denoted by ¿pr2(G), is the minimum cardinality of a semipaired dominating set of G. A near-triangulation is a biconnected planar graph that admits a plane embedding such that all of its faces are triangles except possibly the outer face. We show in this paper that ¿pr(G) = 2b n 4 c for any neartriangulation G of order n = 4, and that with some exceptions, ¿pr2(G) = b 2n 5 c for any near-triangulation G of order n = 5.Peer ReviewedPreprin
Many electronic systems include devices that implement cryptographic algorithms that encrypt stored information. But even if the algorithms are very safe, these devices can reveal some information because of its physical implementation, through the use of so-called side channel attacks. These attacks make use of information obtained during the operation of the circuit to obtain information of the used key. Therefore, we must take care of the physical implementation of cryptographic devices to minimize the possibility of loss of information through these types of attacks. In our research we are working on analyzing the vulnerability of implementations of cryptographic circuits, mainly private key ciphers, against side channel attacks, passive and active. These attacks obtain key information stored by measuring physical quantities such as power consumption or electromagnetic radiation during operation of the circuit, or altering the operating conditions to introduce faults and compare the output with and without faults.
In this paper we present a brief summary of the state of art of side channel attacks on ciphers hardware implementations, some of the topics we are working and some results obtained by our research group.
